Contrasting Practices I
Filmed in a sixth-grade classroom in Urbana Illinois, Contrasting Practices I shows VUE co-director Philip Yenawine teaching Visual Thinking Strategies. The video shows Yenawine "teaching" three images three different ways, first with minimal input and from the back of the room; then from the front of the room, but again with little response, and finally from the front of the room, using the VTS method. The "contrast" is in the students’s responses; they grow increasingly more engaged and thoughtful in each section. 20 minutes.

  • Video $38.00 (NTSC format)
  • Video $81.00 (PAL format)

Contrasting Practices II
Filmed in a fifth-grade classroom in Urbana Illinois, Contrasting Practices II shows VUE co-director Philip Yenawine teaching Visual Thinking Strategies. The video illustrates how the VTS method (using the three non-directive questions, acknowledging student responses, pointing to the area being described, paraphrasing and linking) puts hands in the air and makes the classroom experience an exciting process of discovery for students and teachers. 20 minutes.

  • Video $38.00 (NTSC format)
  • Video $81.00 (PAL format)

Contrasting Practices III
Filmed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art with two groups of eighth grade students, Contrasting Practices III contrasts Philip Yenawine teaching Visual Thinking Strategies with Danielle Rice teaching the method used at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. VTS relies exclusively on open-ended questioning, while the Philadelphia Museum’s method provides space for students to share ideas and feelings, but also gives contextual information about the artist’s life, art history, and so on. The video sequences were shot in preparation for a joint appearance at the National Docent Symposium in early 2000. After teaching, Philip and Danielle "recreate" the symposium by posing questions to one another that were asked of them there. (33 minutes)

  • Video $38.00 (NTSC format)
  • Video $81.00 (PAL format)

VTS: A Tool for Building Visual Literacy, Language Skills, and Critical Thinking (Terra Museum of American Art)
Philip Yenawine demonstrates Visual Thinking Strategies to a group of educators participating in a 2003 workshop at the Terra Museum of American Art in Chicago. The video documents Yenawine facilitating a VTS discussion about a painting in the Terra Foundation for American Art collection, Gallery of the Louvre by Samuel F.B. Morse, followed by an examination of how the discussion was constructed. Classroom and museum educators and docents interested in learner-centered teaching methods may find this video a useful resource. This video was made possible by the Terra Museum of American Art with support from the Terra Foundation for American Art, Chicago, Illinois (Copyright © 2003 Terra Museum of American Art).
